Soul Surfer

The movie was amazing. I do have to say that the shark attack scene is pretty grose and frighting because you see everything even the shark the scene makes you dizzy. Other than that it was an awesome movie. The movie has an all star cast of AnnaSophia Robb, Dennis Quaid, Helen Hunt, Carrie Underwood, Ross Thomas, Lorraine Nicholson, and Chris Brochu.

About Bethany Hamilton

ABOUT BETHANY HAMILTON

Bethany Hamilton has become a source of inspiration to millions through her story of faith, determination, and hope. And now, her story has become a major motion picture entitled SOUL SURFER, featuring an all-star cast including AnnaSophia Robb and Helen Hunt, with Carrie Underwood in her film debut, and Dennis Quaid.

Born into a family of surfers on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, Bethany began surfing at a young age. At the age of eight, Bethany entered her first state-wide surf competition, winning both the short and long board divisions and sparking in herself a love for surf competition. She went on to take runner up at the 2003 US National Championships.

On October 31, 2003, at the age of 13, Bethany was attacked by a 15-foot tiger shark while surfing off Kauai's North Shore. The attack took Bethany's left arm, seemingly ending her career as a rising surf star just as it was beginning.

Bethany says: “It was Jesus Christ who gave me peace when I was attacked by the shark. They had to get me to the beach, which took 20 minutes of paddling. ‘The peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus’ (Philippians 4:6-8).”

After losing more than 60 percent of her blood, and making it through several surgeries without infection, Bethany was on her way to recovery with an unbelievably positive attitude. Lifeguards and doctors believe her strong water sense and faith in God helped get her through the traumatic ordeal. Miraculously, just one month after the attack, Bethany returned to the water.

“It was what God had taught me growing up that helped me overcome my fear and get back on the board. ‘Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go’ (Joshua 1:9).”

In January of 2004, Bethany made her return to surf competition, placing fifth in the Open Women’s division. With no intention of stopping, Bethany continued to enter and excel in competition. Just over a year after the attack she took first place in the Explorer Women’s division of the 2005 National Scholastic Surfing Association National Championships—winning her first National Title.

In 2007, Bethany realized her dream and turned pro. Bethany has since participated in numerous Association of Surfing Professionals and World Tour Events with her major highlight being a second place finish in the ASP 2009 World Junior Championships. She competes with the world’s best and travels the globe throughout Europe, South America, South Africa, Indonesia, Australia, Tahiti, Fiji, the United States and Hawaii.

Bethany has shared her life story in her autobiography, Soul Surfer, as well as several faith-based books and devotionals. She was the subject and inspiration of the 2007 documentary, Heart of a Soul Surfer.

Bethany has launched her own foundation, Friends of Bethany, which supports shark attack survivors, traumatic amputees, and serves to inspire others through her life story, and is involved in numerous other charitable efforts.

From a young age, Bethany’s parents instilled within her a faith in Jesus Christ. As a young girl, she made the decision to have a personal relationship with Him. Bethany’s foundation of faith has been her backbone—her source of truth, hope, and strength.

Connecting with God from Bethany Hamilton the Soul Surfer

CONNECT WITH GOD

When people ask me what my faith in God means to me, I usually answer in just one word: "everything!"

If you want to begin a relationship with God here are 4 things to understand.

God created you to know him. He loves you!

The Bible tells us, "God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life" (John 3:16).

The problem is...

Our sin has separated us from God.

We have all done, said or thought things that we know are wrong. In other words, we have chosen to go our own way instead of God's. This "going our own way" is evidence of what the Bible calls sin.

The Bible says, "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). And, "The wages (penalty) of sin is death" (Romans 6:23).

God is perfect and holy, and our sins separate us from Him forever.

The good news is that, about 2,000 years ago...

God sent His only Son Jesus Christ to die for our sins.

Jesus is the Son of God. He lived a sinless life and then died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins: "God demonstrates His own love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8).

By giving His life for us, Jesus opened up the only way to have a relationship with God. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except by Me" (John 14:6).

Jesus rose from the dead and now He lives with God His Father. He offers us the gift of eternal life of living forever with Him in heaven.

So how can we begin a personal relationship with God?

We must personally receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

The Bible says, "To all who received Him, He gave the right to become children of God. All they had to do was to trust [believe in] Him to save them" (John 1:12).

Receiving Christ means that we acknowledge that we have done things that are wrong, and we trust in Christ alone to forgive us of our sin and help us change our lives to live God's way.

If you want to receive Christ, you can ask Him to be your Savior and Lord RIGHT NOW by praying a prayer like this. Remember, it is not only the words that are important but also the attitude of your heart.

"Lord Jesus, I believe you are the Son of God. Thank you for dying on the cross for my sins. Please forgive my sins and give me the gift of eternal life. I ask you in to my life and heart to be my Lord and Savior. I want to serve you always."

makes Bethany tick.

It came, literally, out of the blue.

I had no warning at all; not even the slightest hint of danger on the horizon. The waves were small and inconsistent, and I was just kind of rolling along with them, relaxing on my board with my left arm dangling in the cool water. I remember thinking, "I hope the surf picks up soon..."

That's all it took: a split second. I felt a lot of pressure and a couple of lightning fast tugs. Then I watched in shock as the water around me turned bright red. Somehow, I stayed calm. My left arm was gone almost to the armpit, along with a huge crescent-shaped chunk of my red, white and blue surfboard...

I remember most clearly what the Kauai paramedic said to me in the ambulance: He spoke softly and held my hand as we were pulling out of the beach parking lot. He whispered in my ear, "God will never leave you or forsake you." He was right.

I believe in God. Nobody made me believe; I don't think you can or should try to force someone to believe something. And even though my parents taught me stuff about God and read Bible stories to me from as early as I can remember... it was my choice to become a believer in Him. The way I see it, putting our faith in God is something that each person has to come to on his or her own. It's your own personal relationship with Him; a bond that's as unique as a fingerprint.

Some people don't think much about this kind of stuff unless something terrible happens to them, or like my parents, until they are older. But I can remember putting my trust in Jesus Christ when I was just a kid, probably around five years old.

When people ask me what my faith in Christ means to me, I usually answer in just one word: "everything!" This was true before the shark attack as well as after. And I truly believe that this faith is a big part of what did get me through it. It helps to know that even when it you don't have a clue why something has happened in your life, someone up there has a master plan and is watching over you. It's a tremendous relief to be able to put your trust in God and take the burden off your shoulders.

My plans to be a professional surfer got hit pretty hard on that Halloween morning. It was my own personal tsunami. In the days, weeks, and months that followed I had a lot of cleaning up to do. Often, it was scary or trying. And I won't lie to you: in some ways it still is. I've worked really hard to become a pro surfer, and am now competing with the best women surfers in the world.

But for me, knowing that God loves me and that he has a plan for my life, that no shark can take away and no contest result can shake, is like having solid rock underneath me. Bad things are bound to happen to everyone. That's life. Here's my advice: don't put all your hope and faith into something that could suddenly and easily disappear. And honestly, that's almost anything. The only thing that will never go away, that will never fail you, is God and your faith in him. All I can say is He gives me a really strong foundation for everything I do in life.
